Fresenius Medical Care – Informational Picket FAQs

What's an informational picket?

On our own time off and on official work breaks, we march, carry picket signs, chant, and share leaflets on public sidewalks in front of the clinic to amplify our concerns to Fresenius' leadership and to our community. An informational picket is not a work stoppage.

Is it similar to a strike?

No. Staff scheduled to work should go to work. Patients scheduled for care should go and get their care. If a PCT is working, they are free to come join the picket line before or after their shift, or on a break. The specific purpose of the action is to communicate the issues we have at the table with the public.

Is it legal?

Absolutely. It's not just legal, it's our right as union members! And it requires all PCTs' participation to be successful! Federal labor law requires that healthcare unions send a notice 10 days in advance of any picket or strike to the employer and to a federal agency so that the facility can make contingency plans. That 10-day notice renders a picket or a strike "legal."

Why involve the community?

Dialysis techs serve and advocate on behalf of the community in which they work every day. The issues we are dealing with directly impact them. The community not only needs to hear but will understand and support why PCTs are concerned about issues in the clinics like a lack of staffing, safety, management's inability to recruit and retain PCTs, not getting breaks, etc.

Who can picket?

Everyone. By everyone, we mean EVERYONE: you (all off-the-clock Fresenius members), your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, patients, and community allies!

Can I get in trouble if my manager doesn't like it?

No. It is illegal for supervisors to question or discipline any staff for talking about or participating in an info picket. The National Labor Relations Act protects your participation in this type of union activity – even if you're on probation. Concerned? Talk to a Steward or Union Rep!

Is this on paid time?

PCTs participating in an informational picket do so on their own time. No one wants to commute, especially on a day off, but by showing the strength of our unit on the picket line, we bolster our power at the table and improve our chances to win a contract that benefits all PCTs.

What about childcare?

Children are welcome! A picket line is an energetic, safe, fun place to use outdoor voices to express our demands for better working conditions so that more PCTs come to work (or stay working) at our clinics, so we don't have to pick up as much overtime and extra shifts and can afford to be with our families more!

What if I can't make it?

Get a friend, neighbor, or coworker to march in your place. Every single person makes a difference! It's crucial that we show up and ask our allies to stand with us. We must show Fresenius the strength of our unity.
