Higher Wages & Paid Sick Leave
I-1433: The initiative would raise the minimum wage in Washington State to $13.50 by 2020, and allow workers to earn an hour of paid sick leave for every forty hours worked. Such a law will reduce wage inequality and boost the local economy, as well as responsibly reduce the chances of spreading illnesses in the workplace.
UFCW 21 is proud to announce that Initiative 1433 is headed to the ballot. With over 350,000 signatures returned to the Secretary of State’s office – far above the 246,372 needed to qualify for the November ballot, UFCW 21 members led signature gathering across the state with over 53k signatures! This is an incredible milestone on the path to a higher minimum wage and paid sick leave.
Families in Washington State are working harder than ever, but still struggle to meet basic needs, we deserve an economy that works for everyone. We deserve the right to take care of our sick children and our health when we fall ill, and we deserve the right to deal with the consequences of domestic violence without losing pay or fearing for our job security.
Getting the initiative on the ballot was just the start. Be sure that you’re registered to vote and vote for I-1433 on the November ballot. Talk to your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors about why you support I-1433 for a stronger healthier working Washington.
When we raise the minimum wage, we rise together; workers are healthier, businesses do better, and communities are stronger. #YESON1433
