UFCW 3000 Member Story: Hector Pradis
Hector Pradis started working in the deli at the Redondo Safeway last year as the assistant manager, and then moved over into the center store to take charge of the Frozen Food Department. Hector says that “I like the fast-paced working environment,” of working in retail grocery. It can get hectic keeping the freezer cases stocked, the walk-in freezer organized and safe to work in, all while providing customers with the service that keeps them coming back.
Hector also stepped up to become a union leader in his workplace by getting shop steward training, “Union leadership plays a crucial role in representing and advocating for the rights and interests of workers,” says Hector. “Being a shop steward has shown me first-hand how management will take advantage and mislead members. It means a lot to me to advocate for my coworkers and work with my Union Rep on issues.”
Hector has also become involved in our union’s fight to stop the Kroger/Albertsons merger, “I have gone to rallies and participated in going to Colorado to support other union locals in their fight to stop this merger, it's a whole different perspective…” That is what building solidarity does, it shows us that the problems and issues that workers face have a lot in common and that the solution is standing together to win a better life for everyone. That even includes workers that haven’t arrived yet, “I don't regret the moment I said yes in becoming a shop steward; this is a fight for the future of the next generation of workers.”
