UFCW 3000 Member Story: Thomas Nelson
Thomas Nelson started working for Safeway in Spokane in April of this year. He started out as a Courtesy Clerk but quickly got promoted to working on the Night Crew and as a Drive-Up & Go Home Shopper. In his 8 months at Safeway, Thomas also got involved in our union. With his family’s strong union background and passion for helping his coworkers stay informed about their rights, Thomas eagerly signed up for Shop Steward training.
Earlier this year, Thomas participated in one of the Democracy Defenders workshops- leading to him to travel to Wisconsin to volunteer canvass with other UFCW 3000 members for Vice President Kamala Harris. When asking Thomas why he is so involved and why he canvassed, he will tell you it's because he wants to ensure everyone has a voice and we are all treated fairly. Though the election may not have turned out the way Thomas and his fellow union members who worked in Wisconsin hoped, with young activists like him ready to fight for the working class there is hope for the future.
Outside of work and activism, Thomas enjoys hiking and playing games with friends and family. He just bought his first car and has very much enjoyed driving around town. Thomas tries to make everyone's day a little brighter by being kind, funny, and treating others with respect, which is what makes him such a great shop steward.
