Remembering Carrie Lee Brookshire

With deeply held grief, we must announce the passing of Carrie Lee Brookshire, our UFCW 3000 Member Resource Center Rep. She leaves behind a long legacy of union work and love from members and coworkers alike.

Those close to Carrie described her as “a powerhouse”, “open, strong, defiant, and funny”, “the sweetest, nicest person”, and someone who offered “her time, her energy, and her heart without hesitation”. UFCW 1439 hired Carrie as the Yakima-area Union Representative in 2012 where she worked tirelessly for her members. Her love of the labor movement started well before that, though, including more than a decade of membership actively organizing and standing up for her coworkers at the Albertsons in La Grande, OR.

In the broader labor movement, Carrie served as President of the Yakima South Central Counties Central Labor Council and Chair of the Business Administration Program Advisory Committee at Yakima Valley College. When UFCW 1439 and UFCW 21 merged to become UFCW 3000, Carrie transitioned to the Membership Resources Department, using her years of experience to enforce our contracts and win members’ reinstatement and backpay through the grievance process.

Even in the hardest times, you would never leave a conversation with Carrie without a laugh, a hug, or a smile (and very often you’d leave with all three). Maybe that’s why so many of us called her, “Mama Carrie”.

Carrie is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Jason, and her talented daughter, Jasmine. She will be very much missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
