Planned Parenthood Union Members Approve Contract

On September 16, Planned Parenthood members overwhelmingly ratified their successor contract in an online vote. The new two-year contract includes across the board wage increases, an additional paid holiday for Juneteenth, and other improvements with no takeaways!

Many thanks to our Bargaining Team and all who participated!

UFCW 21 Member Story: Taylor Cares For Both Her Patients and Her Coworkers

Taylor Fleming, Medical Assistant at Planned Parenthood, poses For a photo.

Time for another #MemberMonday spotlight!

Taylor Fleming is a Medical Assistant who has worked at Planned Parenthood for over a year. Before that, she graduated from Western Washington University and is now a proud UFCW 21 member.

Taylor was glad to find work where she felt like she could work in the service of others — and that her first job is a good union job. Taylor loves her co-workers and the work that she does because she feels that she’s been able to develop rapport and trust with her patients.

Of course, being a frontline, essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic has been tough and stressful for Taylor. Many of her coworkers have left the clinic — in part because of the way management has treated workers, their capacity, and scheduling.

Taylor has seen the retention & turnover issue impacting healthcare workers first-hand. She believes that #SafeStaffingSavesLives and these issues motivated her to get involved with the help of her union rep, Lauren.

Today, Taylor is a reliable resource for her peers. She enjoys helping people better understand their contract, lifting up grievances as necessary, and fostering camaraderie amongst her coworkers. Her work truly contributes to a healthy and positive work environment!

Thank you Taylor for stepping up and becoming a leader who your coworkers trust to help them!

Planned Parenthood - Tentative Agreement Reached

2021 0903 - Planned Parenthood.png

Throughout 6 months of bargaining, management has pushed back on our proposals citing financial constraints. We were able to request and receive financial information from our region of the Affiliate to confirm the financial situation.

We were able to deliver our petitions and tell the stories of our current and past coworkers and the struggles we face day to day to keep the doors open and serve our patients with care and compassion.

The agreement we are recommending is for 2 years while the affiliate works to strengthen their financial position
and includes:

  • Wage increases for all employees: 3% upon ratification with retro back to June 1; 3.5% in June of 2022

  • Additional Juneteenth (6/19) holiday

  • Improved bereavement leave

  • Improved grievance process

We said NO to:

  • Making call assignments mandatory for clinicians

  • Management’s ability to nullify our contract during emergencies like the current pandemic

We are continuing to negotiate time off for recovering for side effects of now mandatory vaccines including flu and COVID vaccines. Once we approve a contract, we can focus on building our power through legislative and organizing work.

In order to vote, everyone needs to make sure their personal email is up to date in our records. If you did not receive this announcement via email, please visit: ufcw21.org/update-your-information. Planned Parenthood - Information Requested

2021 0818 - Planned Parenthood Update2.jpg

We met with Management on Monday, August 16 for further contract negotiations. Even with the overwhelming support on the petitions we circulated, we are still far apart on economics. Our Bargaining Team has proposed both across the board and longevity increases as well as other economic improvements. Management has stated that giving more than small cost of living increases could have dire consequences for the Affiliate.

We have requested financial and other information from Management to substantiate these claims. Our Bargaining Team will review the information before we make a counter proposal. Our next bargaining date is scheduled for September 3.

“We need more information to assess the financial status of the Affiliate before we can make a comprehensive proposal.”

Planned Parenthood - Economic Response from Management

2021 0701 - Planned Parenthood.jpg

We met with Management on Monday to receive their first response to our comprehensive economic proposal. They rejected many of our non-wage proposals including:

  • Cash out of vacation over the cap

  • 3 additional sick days

  • Premiums for receiving training in specialty skills

  • Commitment to reinstating retirement match

We did get agreement on an increase to the bilingual premium and adding Juneteenth (June 19) as a holiday beginning in 2022.

“We see the affiliate offering recruitment bonuses for certain positions, but we’d rather see that money invested in keeping current employees. Better wages and premiums will also help with recruitment.”

We need to hear from you! Management is saying they cannot yet commit to when retirement matching will be reinstated. How has the pause in matching affected you?

We met with Management Tuesday and delivered our economic proposals:

  • A two-year contract

  • Daily overtime for work past your scheduled shift

  • Wage increases retroactive to June 1

  • Moving to increases twice a year: June 1, and your anniversary

  • Adding Juneteenth (June 19) as a recognized, paid holiday

  • Reinstating retirement matching contributions

  • Premiums for receiving training in specialty skills

  • Expansions to bereavement and sick leave

  • Minimum wage escalators to keep all scales above the minimums

  • Improvements to bilingual premium

  • Severance in the event of layoff or closure

Additionally we have made proposals to improve incentives and rotation of on-call work for clinicians!

We were able to reach Tentative Agreements (TAs) on:

  • Innovative work schedules beyond the standard 5 – 7.5 hour days

  • 30 day notice if asked to return to the office from a telecommuting agreement

  • Expanded grievance timelines

Planned Parenthood Progress at the Bargaining Table

2020 0520 - Planned Parenthood update.jpg

Our bargaining team met with management on Wednesday and made a lot of progress on the language of our contract. We were able to get management to move off of some of their proposals. We have reached tentative agreements around:

  • Ability to grieve all levels of discipline.

  • Capturing Planned Parenthood’s Paid Parental Leave policy in our contract.

  • Notification to the union in advance of any reduction to healthcare or retirement plans.

  • Layoff process for workers not assigned to one location (float clinicians & community outreach educators).

  • Maintaining seniority if laid off then recalled.

  • Clarification to access to benefits during probation period.

  • Clarification to vacation cashout at the end of employment.

  • Cleanup/clarifications to our Union Security language.

Your Bargaining Team: Charlie King, PAC Rep - Tacoma; Monalisa Baumann, MA - Federal Way; Jennifer Morgan, PCC - Tacoma; Sage Alixander, Insurance Biller - Seattle

We expect to make economic proposals at our next bargaining session on June 8.

There are still a few outstanding issues on the table that we need your input on as we move into the economic part of our negotiations.

Your voices help to bring real stories to the bargaining table. Please fill out the bargaining topics survey here: bit.ly/pp-issuesurvey

Planned Parenthood - Management Holds to Bad Proposals

Management Holds to Bad Proposals

While we have reached tentative agreements on:

  • Reinstating our ability to grieve discipline at every level

  • Receiving email address with employee rosters for easier communication

  • Ensuring seniority remains full intact if recalled from a layoff

  • Bringing our contract in compliance with meal and rest break laws

Management has dug in their heels on their anti-union proposals and REJECTED our proposals for:

  • Severance language in case of layoff

  • Notifications on changes to telecommuting practices

  • Paycheck deduction of union initiation fee

  • We have not yet traded proposals on economics.

Planned Parenthood - Bargaining Continues

2020 0505 - Planned Parenthood.jpg

Our Bargaining Team met with Management on Wednesday to receive Management’s non-economic proposals for our contract. Unfortunately, many of these proposals were outright anti-union including:

  • Using union dues to cover the cost of Management’s attorneys’ fees for lawsuits related to our contract

  • Large expansions of Management rights, potentially eroding union rights

  • Voiding the entire union contract’s protections during “emergencies” as defined by Management

  • Allowing discipline and attendance to determine layoff and recall instead of seniority and disrupting seniority for certain recall scenarios

  • Limiting workers’ ability to take action educating co-workers and the public during contract disputes and bargaining

Our Bargaining Team proposed adding per diem employees to our contract, and Management rejected the idea entirely. If you work with a per diem, please reach out to a member of the Bargaining Team.

We need to stand together for a contract that improves our wages and working conditions with NO TAKEAWAYS. Wear your sticker to support the Bargaining Team when we return to the table May 10!

Planned Parenthood - Tentative Agreement Reached with Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands

2020 0611 - Planned Parenthood.jpg

Our Bargaining Team began meeting this Spring to negotiate our contract. Even though the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from meeting in person, we have continued to work together to fight for fair wage increases.

We won respectful wage increases across the board for all employees.

This agreement is for one year (through 5/31/21), so we’ll be back to the table next spring to negotiate a full contract. We’re excited to work with our co-workers to continue to address wages and other issues.

“Given restrictions on meetings and dealing with an ongoing pandemic, we are glad to have reached this 1-year deal now so that members can get immediate raises. The outcome of the presidential elections will give us a clearer picture or Planned Parenthood’s funding, and we can fight for everything we deserve next year.”
