Puget Sound Allied Grocery Stores Pay Us What We Deserve!
/On May 12 to 13, our member-led bargaining team sat across from Kroger and Albertsons to demand higher wages, better staffing, a secure health care trust, and a retirement we can count on.
While we’ve made some progress toward adequately funding our health care and strengthening our retirement plan, the employer either rejected our economic proposals outright or barely budged an inch.
They rejected higher pay for longtime courtesy clerks, they demanded that our hard-working general merchandisers continue to accept lower pay than grocery workers, and then they insulted us by moving a measly 50 cents on wages.
That means – over the course of 12 bargaining sessions – they’ve moved a whole 75 cents on wages.
“This Friday marks my 20th anniversary as a courtesy clerk at Safeway in Anacortes. In many ways I’m the face of the store, but I get paid the least. It’s time for Kroger and Albertsons to honor our work!” - Joseph Baltz, Anacortes Safeway
With time running out, the employer is moving in inches when we need to be ticking off miles.
No matter what happens at the bargaining table next week, we will vote on the grocery contract on June 3, 4, 5. Rally your co-workers and prepare to carpool!
Next bargaining dates: May 19, 20, 21.
