Stop the Robot Invasion in our Grocery Stores
/Fred Meyer recently notified our union of their intention to roll out inventory robots called “Tally.” These 6.5-foot tall, AI-enabled robots roll up and down aisles to check shelves for “out-of-stock” items. Fred Meyer claims these robots would “only be there to supplement non-union management” with monitoring out-of-stock items, but we know union members regularly do this work.
We believe outsourcing our union jobs to robots will erode our unity in the worksite, reduce available hours for those who need them to pay the rent, and threaten the stability of our benefits.
We must continue to fight these drastic changes to our workplace. As a first step, our union filed a request for information about these robots. We will then work on filing a grievance against the erosion of our contract. However, we cannot wait for the grievance process to resolve our issues. We must organize.
