Macy's Bargaining Update: Downright Disrespectful
/On June 3, Macy’s publicly announced that our work gave the company its “strongest first-quarter in four years” -- and then executives turned around and offered our member-led Bargaining Team wage proposals that fall well short of a living wage.
Macy’s proposed a 30-cent raise for each year of the contract. With the cost of gas, groceries, and housing rising to astronomical levels, a 30-cent annual raise is already a slap in the face. In a year when the company is posting its strongest quarter in recent memory, the offer is downright disrespectful.
Macy’s also rejected:
Raising the commission rates and fixing the deficit system that stops many workers from earning commission;
Scheduling language that would prevent or at least pay us a premium for working more than five days in a row;
Adding contract language that would make sure we get credited for all our years of service for applicable benefits;
Paying us above minimum wage in areas that have higher rates.
“I can’t believe that Macy’s would do this on the same day that they are bragging about their sales increases! It is time for us to get organized and to take action!” -Daniel Landon, Shoe Sales, Alderwood Macy’s
