Capital Medical Center RN - We Have Reached a Deal!

2020 1106 - Capital Medical Center RN Update2.jpg

On November 5, the RN Bargaining Team met with the Hospital. After almost a year of bargaining, we were able to obtain a contract settlement! At the start of bargaining, we believed our biggest fight was going to be over maintaining EIB, like it was down the road at Providence St. Peter’s. The Hospital indicated that they would be following Providence St. Peter’s settlement, so we made the strategic decision to slowdown bargaining until the St. Peter’s RNs settled on EIB. That decision paid off when Providence St. Peter’s announced they would be maintaining the EIB program in January.

At that point, we continued bargaining and were focused on wages, increasing education reimbursement money, and improving contract language like floating and call-back pay. We were making some progress when the COVID-19 pandemic started. At that time, we could no longer bargain in-person and had to evaluate how to move forward. At all other tables, the employers agreed to bargain virtually via Zoom, but Capital Medical Center refused to bargain virtually for months.

Finally, in October we were able to resume bargaining and made a lot of progress. We moved away from some contract language proposals and focused on wages and retroactive pay. We insisted on retroactive pay, but the Hospital told us they would rather do higher increases than retroactive pay. When looking at the percentage increases, we determined that higher pay increases would result in more compensation than retroactive pay. In addition, the pay increases we won are higher than Providence St. Peter’s increases.

Our next step is to walk through the tentative agreement with the unit on Thursday, November 12 at 5:30 PM via Zoom. Due to COVID-19, we will be voting via mail. Ballots and vote documents will be sent out via standard mail and the documents will be posted on ufcw21.org. If you or your coworkers, do not received mail from UFCW 21 please contact your Union Rep, Nicholas Hefling nhefling@ufcw21.org so we can update your address and ensure you receive a ballot.

“Our hard work paid off and we received raises that are unheard of during these times.”

— Bonnie Verellen, RN Women Services

“We deserve higher pay and we were able to win higher pay because we kept fighting.”

— Sara McFarland, RN Ambulatory

“We have never gotten 10% wage increases before on any contract.”

— Scott Merrell, RN Emergency Department

St. Michael Medical Center: Service & Dietary

SPECIAL VOTE NOTICE: Memorandum of Understanding
Dietary Unit Host

As you may remember, we have already ratified the St. Michael Medical Center (Harrison) Service & Dietary Contract. However, the Employer has since approached the Union requesting that we add a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the new “Dietary Unit Host” position.

The Employer would like Dietary Unit Hosts to work under a 12-hour shift schedule, currently prohibited under our contract, so they have proposed this new MOU to create an exception for this new position. If approved, this MOU would only affect members classified as a Dietary Unit Host and would not authorize the Medical Center to schedule other job classifications under a 12-hour shift schedule.

The proposed addition must be approved through a full membership vote, the decision is up to you! We will be sending out a vote packet with your ballot and a summary of the proposed changes to the mailing address we have on file.

We will be holding a contract vote meeting to explain the tentative agreement via Zoom on Friday, October 2 @ 8-9AM and 4-5PM. Instructions to join will be included in your vote packet.

Olympic Medical Center Support Services - Contract Vote Scheduled

2020 0803 - OMC Service Notice.jpg

Our Bargaining Team for Support Services has reached an agreement with OMC. We began bargaining in late June 2020 due to the pandemic. Our main concerns during bargaining were wages and ensuring that we fixed the wage compression given the increased State hourly minimum rate. Initially OMC proposed lower increases than we expected given the loss in revenue due to the pandemic. But at the end, we were able to fight and win higher increases than in past contracts!

The next step is to vote to approve the contract. We will be sending out a second notice with a vote date/time or we will be running a mail-in ballot contract vote. Please update your email/address on our website in order to receive your vote documents.

We will be holding a contract vote meeting to explain the tentative agreement via Zoom on August 18, from 8AM - 9PM and 5PM - 6PM.

PRMCE RN Contract Extension Vote

2020 0721 PRMCE RN vote notice.jpg

Contract Extension Vote

At the end of May 2020, Providence approached the Union and proposed a contract extension for the RN unit through June 2021. The current RN contract expires October 31, 2020 and we had planned to start bargaining before October.

It is typical that the Union and Providence enter a contract extension of three months during regular bargaining in order to keep the contract in effect. Since this is a longer than typical extension, we started having weekly calls amongst the bargaining committee and key RN leaders to discuss the benefits and negatives of an extension.

After many meetings, your RN bargaining committee/leaders have decided that an extension would NOT be beneficial for the unit.

Currently Providence is offering a 4% increase in 2020, but all RNs would start paying for parking as of October 2021. Meaning that a portion of your increase would go towards parking. Parking was a huge issue during the professional and technical units’ bargaining last year. They fought to postpone paying for parking until the RNs started paying for parking. As so, an extension with paid parking would affect the RNs, Pros, Techs, and even other union members at PRMCE. Although a 4% increase sounds enticing, all units would loss the benefit of free parking and we likely will never be able to win back that benefit!

That said, your bargaining committee and RN leaders are recommending a “NO” vote! We will be conducting the contract extension vote via standard mail. All ballots must be postmarked by August 7, 2020 in order to be counted. If you do not receive mail from the Union, please update your contact information online: ufcw21.org/update-your-information or contact Anthony Cantu, Union Rep (206)436-6566.

Vote meeting to explain the contract extension: Tuesday, July 28 at 8pm via Zoom Meeting After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
