After months of trying to get dates on the calendar, Bargaining Team Members met with Management and gave a full contract proposal including increases to wages and additional vacation and holidays.

Management seemed receptive and we anticipate a response from them soon!

Evergreenhealth Monroe - Evergreenhealth Has a Problem with Retention and Recruitment Due to Non-Competitive Wages

Your voices have been heard and your bargaining team has been working diligently bringing your most important issues to the table.

We have worked countless days to convince Management of your worth.

Management let us know early on that they were struggling and that wage increases may be low.

They also said the employer cost of health insurance has gone up so significantly that we will probably have to change plans after 2023.

Management’s first wage proposal was less than 6% spread out over two years. We proposed a three year contract with wages totaling more than 20% over three years.

Management has now come back to the table with a better proposal on wages. But we’re not there yet.

Senate Bill 5259: Protecting Workers from Impacts of Retail Theft

On January 26, 2023, the Senate Labor Committee heard Senate Bill 5259, a bill we’ve worked on to address the impacts of retail theft on our members and our workplaces. UFCW 3000 members have been raising the safety and financial issues around retail theft for years now, and members in grocery and retail said that tackling retail theft and ensuring workplace safety were top legislative priorities for 2023. SB 5259 would prohibit discipline of a grocery worker who engages during a situation of retail theft, and UFCW 3000 members and staff testified in support during the committee hearing.

“I wasn’t given any kind of training on what the manager wanted me to do to ‘intervene’ here, but I felt like I needed to follow his instructions or I would lose my job. In fact, in this case, following his instructions got me fired because when I did in fact intervene here, I lost my job for violating company policy by intervening with this woman. Instead of being required to take preventative measures to deter this kind of theft, Fred Meyer punished me for doing what should be their job. From 2018 to 2020, the number of assaults reported to the FBI rose 42% overall, but by 63% in grocery stores. And in 2021, more than half of mass shooter incidents were in places of commerce. We need your help! Violent attacks are going to continue regardless of what you do this year to protect our jobs. We know what type of deterrence works, and that is to deliver the best possible customer service to every customer. “Our daily loss is listed by the time clock in our stores. Between when I started to now, that daily loss number has gone from in the hundreds to now thousands. Daily. It doesn’t seem fair to me that the theft the grocery companies do nothing to deter affects my department profit numbers, for which I’m then held accountable. At my Safeway we are told that we have to have our counters full and ready for customers by a set time every day, but it’s hard to do that when a customer walks in and fills up a cart with meat and walks out without paying. I know that as a manager in my Seafood department, if I could simply walk up to a customer who was doing this, to ask them if they need help, it would be a deterrence. Our stores need to have effective deterrence because workers in our stores like me are held to account for the store’s failure to deter theft.” -Anna McAllister, Safeway, Kent

Kronos Outage Update —Last year there was a Kronos outage and Management overpaid many of us and then took money out of our paychecks. Our union in partnership with the other unions sued Multicare and won the lawsuit. However, now MultiCare has rejected the courts ruling and is in the process of appealing the Judges decision. We have demanded dates to bargain with Management and continue to work to find a resolution.

We’re Telling Our Legislators: Safe Staffing Standards Can’t Wait

After supporting our communities through three years of a pandemic, staffing in our hospitals is worse than ever. We know we don’t have a shortage of healthcare workers; we have a shortage of healthcare workers who are willing to work in these conditions. That’s why we’re calling on the legislature to pass a comprehensive law that puts patient safety and healthcare workers first.

Senate Bill 5236 calling for safe staffing standards was introduced in the Washington State legislature and had its first public hearing Jan. 17. The bill includes:

  • Safe staffing standards including maximum patient assignments

  • Adequate enforcement of staffing laws

  • Expanded protections for overtime and breaks

  • Protecting our rights to staffing committees and expanding them to be inclusive of the entire care team

Lourdes Medical Center / Lifepoint - Tentative Agreement Reached—Vote Scheduled!

After just 8 sessions of bargaining, your Bargaining Team is recommending a YES vote on the proposed new 3-year contract with Lourdes Medical Center.

  • Secure across the bargaining unit wage increase for all members each year of the contract and retro back to January 1, 2023

UFCW Local Unions Disappointed by Washington State Supreme Court Ruling to Allow Albertsons Massive $4 Billion Dividend as Part of Proposed Mega Merger

“We are disappointed to see a ruling that favors a small number of ultra-wealthy shareholders over the many thousands of essential workers and millions of Americans who will be left to suffer the consequences of the outright financial looting of Albertsons. Despite this setback that allows the $4 billion dividend to be issued, the delay allowed the United States Senate to scrutinize the dividend payment as well as the mega-merger, and alerted the public to the disastrous consequences if the merger were to go through. We applaud Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson and his staff for their efforts fighting to protect our members and the communities we serve. Our unions will not stop working to protect our members and our communities from the harmful impacts of this proposed mega-merger of Kroger and Albertsons. It is now even more important that the Federal Trade Commission take swift and decisive action to block the acquisition.”

Background:

From the first day the proposed merger was announced, UFCW Local 5, UFCW Local 7, UFCW Local 324, UFCW Local 367, UFCW Local 400, UFCW Local 770, UFCW Local 1442, UFCW Local 3000 and Teamsters 38 have been taking action to intervene and stop this devastating deal. 

On November 1st, Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a lawsuit in state court seeking to stop the payout and a temporary restraining order was granted through December 9th.

On Tuesday November 29 the US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee held a hearing to scrutinize the proposed Kroger/Albertsons mega merger, along with an alarming, up to $4 billion “special dividend” announced by Albertsons in connection with the merger agreement. In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission urging the agency to intervene, more than two dozen antitrust experts and local unions representing Albertsons’ workers decried the payout as “nothing less than an out-and-out looting of the company” and a brazen attempt to destabilize the company ahead of regulatory review of the merger. 

On December 9th, the Superior Court Judge in King County Washington ruled against issuing a preliminary injunction, but delayed the effect of the decision until December 19th to allow time for an appeal by the WA AG to be considered by the State Supreme Court. On December 16th, the WA State Supreme Court issued a ruling granting the State AG’s Injunctive Relief and extended the Temporary Restraining Order on the Albertsons dividend until further order of the court.

This week UFCW 3000 members and our allies at SEIU Healthcare 1199NW and WSNA, along with community supporters, made our presence known at the State Capitol during a state senate hearing on Safe Staffing bill SB 5236. Health care workers testified during the committee hearing and met with lawmakers to ensure they know how desperate the staffing crisis is—and how important it is to pass statewide safe staffing standards now.

We are not alone: Firefighters, mental health advocates, rare disease patient advocates, and others also testified in support. And more than 2,000 people signed in “Pro” in support of the bill, more than twice as many as those opposed!

Bargaining

We are at a standstill with bargaining. We have proposed all of our noneconomic proposals and sent over our first economic/wage proposals but heard nothing back from Management. It has been over a month since we have seen any substantial proposals or progress from Management, and they have cancelled the last two weeks of bargaining that we scheduled. It is time for Management to get serious, listen to us the workers and come to the table with substantial proposals that will address our issues.

We come to work, day in and day out and work extremely hard to take care of our patients and community. It is time for Management to respect us and take care of us. Please keep an eye out for more information about our next steps. We need to take action and let them know that we are united and ready fight for what we deserve!

Our Bargaining Team met with the Employer for two days of bargaining this week. While we were very close to reaching a Tentative Agreement we caught some mistakes in documents that the Employer provided to us and we were unable to continue until those were investigated and taken care of. We are still confident that our hard work at the table will help win a contract that address economic justice and strengthen our Union within the workplace.

We believe it is time that ALSCO hears our voice!

We have been bargaining with ALSCO Linen since September 2022. During that time, we have won improvements to layoff language, access to new employee orientation, extension to the grievance timeline, and reinstatement of seniority to previously laid off employees during COVID.

We have not been able to reach an agreement on several items including wage increases and benefits. ALSCO continues to propose below market wage increases, passing on health insurance premium costs to workers, and refuses to improve the retirement pension.

We believe it is time that ALSCO hears our voice! We want a safe workplace and want management to show their appreciation for our hard work.

We will be voting on ALSCO’s last proposal on January 17.

We are recommending a “NO” vote.

The fight's not over: We’re heading back to Olympia to address the staffing crisis

We haven’t given up the fight for safer staffing. Last legislative session, we made momentous progress in elevating the staffing recruitment and retention crisis to lawmakers, media, and the public. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to secure safe staffing standards in 2022. But we know the crisis hasn’t gotten better – if anything, it’s gotten worse.

We’re gearing up now to take the fight back to Olympia and do what it takes to make sure healthcare workers have the staffing they need to provide excellent care. We look forward to sharing more policy specifics soon. But we need you to keep fighting, too.

Willapa Harbor Hospital - Wage Increase Vote Scheduled

You are scheduled to receive a 3% contractual wage increase effective January 1, 2023. Management has agreed to increase this amount by 2%, to make it a 5% increase effective January 1, 2023.

This tentative agreement is a change to your current contract so must be voted on by members! UFCW 3000 members in good standing are encourage to attend the vote meeting and cast their vote.
