Providence Radiant Care - Making Progress!

In our second bargaining session with Providence Radiant Care on November 17, we reached tentative agreements on nine articles. We agreed on the preamble, recognition of the bargaining unit, union membership, union representative matters, management rights, grievance procedure, no strike/no lock-out, labor management committees, and successorship.

These articles provide workers with irrevocable rights and an avenue to fight contract violations and workplace issues. For example, the successorship article guarantees that Providence provides 60 days’ notice prior to any sale, merger, or transfer of Radiant Care. At which time, the Union would send a demand to bargain over the effects of the sale to the new employer and Providence. This gives workers a voice during the sale process and ensures that you are given the opportunity to negotiate your contractual benefits with the new employer.

Additionally, we proposed five more articles which cover workplace conditions like hours of work/overtime, seniority, employment practices, definition of full-time and part-time employees, and leaves of absence. Providence will be responding to our counterproposal during our next bargaining session on December 7. Also we plan to make our compensation proposal on December 7.

At other bargaining tables, it has taken us about five to seven sessions to reach agreement on nine articles. We are hopeful that this is an indicator that Providence is willing to compromise on non-economic matters so we can start discussing compensation/ benefits.

We will go into more bargaining details and next steps at our Contract Action Team (CAT) meeting on November 30 from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM via Zoom. If you have any questions, workplace issues, or are called into a disciplinary meeting, please contact Erin McCoy 206-436-6598 (landline).

Bargaining Dates:

December 7 and December 8 (cancelled by Providence), awaiting January bargaining dates

UFCW21 Kaiser Update - TENTATIVE AGREEMENT REACHED!

After months of local and national bargaining, Informational Picketing and Leaflets, and negotiating last week through the night - UFCW21 and all Union Members in the Alliance of Health Care Unions reached a Tentative Agreement on all contracts!

In Local negotiations for both Pro Tech Optical and Pharmacy, our Bargaining Team won additional improvements in premiums and staffing and contractual language, with NO TAKEAWAYS. We secured improvements for Optical and Pharmacy’s Sound Health Retirement Pension- with a guarantee to increase contribution rates to a percentage of salary during the life of the contract. Other highlights include increasing Retiree Medical for all KPWA UFCW21 members from $350 to $1000 for every year of service and Strong Across the Board Wage increases and bonuses each year of the contract. We will continue partnering with SEIU and OPEIU to advocate for improvements to our healthcare in KPWA.

Additionally, the newly organized Spokane Pharmacy Techs won a historic contract including the Western Washington wage scale, maintaining their current retirement, new premiums and benefits, and an accretion allowing them to unite in strength and solidarity with hundreds of UFCW21 Pharmacy members in Western Washington.

In the next couple of days, UFCW21 will send out a vote notice to all members with dates and times of votes in December.

Please update your contact information- so that you receive all notices and can participate in meetings and the Online Vote in Western Washington. Spokane Pharmacy Techs will have an in-person Vote Meeting in Spokane. Go to: ufcw21.org/update-your-information

2022 Grocery Store Worker Negotiations Kick Off

Grocery Store Worker union negotiations kick off

Grocery Store Workers have continued to show up for our customers and communities through some of the hardest conditions and circumstances imaginable. It’s time to celebrate our dedication to each other and kick-off this negotiation cycle united and strong.

All week union members, leaders, and Reps have been visiting each of our 200+ union stores handing out buttons, bargaining information, and taking pictures in workplaces as part of our strategy to get as many members involved, informed, and activated as possible! It’s time for employers to Respect, Protect, and Pay essential grocery store workers!

We are prepared and ready

Preparations for next year’s contract negotiations have begun. Union grocery store workers are more involved and active than ever before as we partner with Teamsters Local 38 here in Washington and other UFCW locals across the Western U.S. Together we are the power of over 100,000 grocery store workers.

Employers have shown over the last two years how much they prioritize their record high profits over the safety and pay of essential workers. The only way we change that is by making them change through collective action. When we fight together, we win together.

When we fight we win

Our Union Bargaining Team will build targeted contract proposals, based on the priorities set by the membership around everything from wages to better safety language, then take those proposals to the Employer's representatives at the bargaining table in early 2022. The Employer will also make proposals to our Bargaining Team. Often times these are proposals to cut our contract benefits and take away gains we have fought for and won in past contracts.

In 2019, successful contract negotiations resulted in the largest wage increases in our union's history, improved safety language, stronger scheduling language, new workforce development and training language, maintained our health care benefits with no increase in costs, and perhaps the biggest win of all: secured and improved our retirement pension.

This contract negotiation our union bargaining team, made of rank-and-file union members from diverse workplaces, will continue to focus on the priorities identified by thousands of members in the bargaining survey:

  • Win higher wages, especially at the top of our pay scales

  • Create more equity in pay between departments

  • Protect our high-quality, low-cost health care plan

  • Keep our pension funded and secure

  • Improve store safety and training

  • Improve recruitment and retention so we have the proper staff to help us get the work done

Providence Radiant Care - Bargaining Commences!

On November 11, we had our first bargaining session with Providence Radiant Care. The parties agreed to ground rules for the bargaining process, which includes introducing all proposals, e.g. wages/compensation, by December 7.  Providence proposed in our first session a package proposal which included sixteen articles covering workplace conditions and benefits, but did not include compensation. Providence told us that they are interested in reaching a deal quickly and wanted to avoid bargaining for more than a year like we did for the newly organized units at Providence Centralia Hospital (PCH) and Providence St. Peter’s Hospital (PSPH).

Providence said that they were proposing language from the new PCH and PSPH contracts, but when the bargaining team reviewed the proposal, we found that they only proposed subsections of articles or proposed weaker language. For example, under the health benefits article Providence proposed, they would offer the same plans that the majority of Providence employees receive to Radiant Care employees. Under the PCH and PSPH contracts, we have detailed information about the health plans, Providence must notify us of any plan changes, and Providence cannot increase premiums by more than 10%. All of this was missing from their proposal.

This is just one example of how their package proposal fell short. With a package proposal, you must accept the entire proposal. Given that, we rejected Providence’s package proposal and responded with our own package proposal which covers recognition, union membership, management rights, union access, grievance procedure, successorship, labor management committee, and strikes/lockout.

We agree that reaching a deal sooner rather than later is beneficial, but we cannot agree to a subpar deal. We deserve competitive wage increases and quality contract language like PSPH and PCH. We hope that Providence will take this into consideration and will accept our package proposal in our next session.

Our next bargaining session is on November 17. We will be holding a contract action team meeting to go over bargaining details on November 30 from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM via Zoom. If you have any workplace issues or questions, please reach out to Erin McCoy (union representative) 206-436-6598.

Bargaining Dates:

November 17, December 7, December 8

Capital Medical Center (All units) - Vote Scheduled Over Healthcare Amendments

When MultiCare acquired Capital Medical Center earlier this year we bargained with your new Employer to make some changes to our contract, which included moving members over to the MultiCare healthcare plan. However, the premium rates charged to Capital Medical Center employees remained significantly higher than what other MultiCare employees are paying, even though you are on the same plan.

We are pleased to report that we were able to negotiate with MultiCare further changes to your healthcare plan that will change your premium rates to match what other UFCW 21 members are paying at other facilities for plan year 2022. This result is significantly lower premiums in most plans!

Let’s look at the “My Connected Care” plan (if you’ve participated in the wellness plan):

Employee Only
Current Rates: $221/mo
Proposed Rates: NO PREMIUM!

Employee + Spouse
Current Rates: $633/mo
Proposed Rates: $210/mo

Employee + Children
Current Rates: $433/mo
Proposed Rates: $111/mo

Employee + Family
Current Rates:$762/mo
Proposed Rates: $294/mo

All other plan details such as deductibles, co-pays, network coverage, and out of pocket maximums remain unchanged with the new premium rates.

We will have a virtual membership meeting on Monday, November 29 @ 6 PM to share all the details of the proposed changes. It’s extremely important that members attend the meeting to get a full understanding of the employer’s offer and have your questions answered ahead of the actual vote. (Contact your Bargaining Team or Union Rep for Zoom details. Details will also be emailed.)

While the information in your open enrollment packet includes these changes, they still require a full vote of UFCW 21 membership at Capital Medical Center. We will be voting online via “SimplyVoting” on Thursday, December 2 @ 6 AM - 8PM. You will be receiving an email from UFCW 21 via “SimplyVoting” with your unique login information.

In order to vote, everyone needs to make sure their personal email is up to date in our records. If you did not receive this announcement via email, go to: ufcw21.org/update-your-information

If you do not receive an email to vote on Thursday, December 2, then please reach out to Union Rep Ian Jacobson @ (206) 436-6550 no later than 5 PM on the day of the vote to provide an updated email address.

Kaiser Permanente Pro Tech Optical and Pharmacy - Enough is Enough! Strike Authorization Votes Set for December 8

On Wednesday KP Professional, Technical and Optical workers along with community allies marched in informational pickets at clinics in Bellevue, Capitol Hill and Tacoma. In Silverdale, union members handed out leaflets to patients and community members. The weather was clear and all participants had fun with chants, waving signs and enjoying the opportunity to come out on a lunch break and tell KP enough is ENOUGH!

The morning began as our coworkers from SEIU 1199 and OPEIU 8 wore stickers in solidarity in all three picket locations. At 11:30 when the marching and chanting began, KP was prepared with a strong presence of both security and management. One member commented that she had rarely seen security until this day and had never seen the director prowling around the doorways.

The media were present to capture all the noise and excitement. Union members were happy at Capitol Hill when a local business brought cups of hot chocolate to warm them up!

https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2021/11/04/62541228/kaiser-permanente-workers-picket-in-preparation-for-possible-strike

In Washington, we return back to local and national bargaining this week. UFCW 21 is preparing next steps which include a Strike Authorization Vote on

December 8 for members in the Pro-Tech Optical and Spokane units—and training for all leaders on common questions regarding strikes. More information to come!

Remember—it is a violation of Labor Law to intimidate workers engaged in protected concerted union activity, so workers should not experience any retaliation for their actions picketing or leafleting. Please notify UFCW 21 immediately if you have reason to believe you are being retaliated against in any way.

National Bargaining Update

National Bargaining continues. KP is still ignoring the worker shortage and the dedication all employees have shown throughout the pandemic by offering low increases and a two-tier wage system, meaning future employees will earn less.

Last week, three of the Alliance’s largest unions—UNAC/UHCP (SCAL Bargaining Units), USW Local 7600, and OFNHP—have announced that they will strike starting November 15 unless negotiations improve. Collectively, the three unions represent 32,000 Kaiser Permanente workers in CA, OR, and WA. An additional 8,000 Alliance members have taken strike votes and may issue a strike notice shortly. Nationally, conversations continue this week to try and reach an agreement before the November 15 deadline.

Conifer - Bargaining Continues

“We find ourselves returning to the same principles of fairness and respect as the Employer refuses to place wages on the table. We feel that the Employer’s insistence of dragging their feet to even make an initial offer shows a concerning lack of both.”

-Bargaining Team: Shirley Messner, Rosandra Fedorko, Molly Werder

Your Bargaining Team met with the Employer again on November 2 and 5.

We are pleased to report significant process on several issues. We’ve won double the notice of upcoming schedules, amended seniority language to ensure fair treatment, increased the timeframe to file a grievance against the Employer, increased minimum hours paid when reporting to work, and much more.

However, we still have many unresolved issues such as paid sick time, the addition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official paid holiday, healthcare and retirement improvements, workplace safety and, most importantly, wages. In fact, the Employer has continuously failed to make an economic counteroffer from the Union’s initial wage proposal made on October 22.

One of the primary reasons for the delay is that the Employer has refused to provide information requested by the Union needed to craft our safety/staffing proposal. Because they’ve refused to cooperate with the request, we haven’t been able to pass our safety/staffing proposal to Management, consequently, they’ve responded by refusing to provide their economic counter.

The Union alleges that the Employer’s refusal to provide the requested information is a violation of the law, which is why we have filed charges against the company with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). We are expecting a decision from the board soon.

This standoff has stalled negotiations until we have a decision from the board, which we hope to have in the coming days. We have reserved November 11 to meet again with Management however, if we do not have an answer by that time we will be forced to cancel and wait until our next scheduled date on November 23.

Capital Medical Center Bargaining Update - SIGN THE PETITION

“We need everyone to show solidarity against MultiCare’s takeaways by signing the petition.”

Bargaining Team: Adam Swigart, Julie Hinchcliff, and Maureen Ciglia

Our Bargaining Team met with Management again on November 1 to continue negotiations.

We were looking forward to receiving the Employer’s counteroffer on wages, however, we were again disappointed when Management failed to have a proposal ready. While we did continue to make further progress on non-economic language issues, it’s frustrating that the Employer has decided to stall on wages.

Furthering our frustration is Management’s insistence that we replace our Paid Time Off (PTO) and Extended Illness Bank (EIB) with MultiCare’s standard program. Your Bargaining Team has completed a full analysis of how the proposal would affect every member and, while some members would actually gain some PTO, others would stand to lose a significant amount of PTO. The situation is even worse with MultiCare’s EIB proposal because every benefited employee would have their EIB accrual rate reduced by about 40%!

We simply cannot accept such proposal as your Bargaining Team firmly believes we need a contract that benefits EVERY member; accordingly, we have officially rejected the proposal. We find it unacceptable that the Employer has decided to propose takeaways when they should instead work on more important issues such as our current staffing crisis.

Please sign the petition demanding that MultiCare keep their hands off our PTO and EIB, instead focusing on solutions to help Capital Medical Center recruit and retain high quality staff. Scan the QR code or go to:

UPCOMING VOTE: As mentioned in a previous bargaining update, we have tentatively agreed to new healthcare premium rates that will become effective next year if approved by a vote of membership. Due to the time sensitive nature of the changes, we will be conducting a special membership vote in the coming weeks on the changes separate from the eventual vote on the entire contract. More details regarding the vote will be shared next week.

Jefferson HealthCare Pro Tech & Clinic - Bargaining Continues

The union bargaining team met with management on Wednesday and exchanged proposals. Some of the proposals addressed:

  • Rest Between Shifts

  • Shift Differentials

  • Interpreter Pay (our Bargaining Team proposed a higher premium)

  • Lead Pay

  • Consecutive Days

  • Temporary Assignments

  • Weekend Work

  • Preceptor

Management agreed with us on some of our proposals including new language on Lactation Breaks and extending the Memorandum of Understanding for a Dietary Task Force.

Our next scheduled session is November 11 but are hoping to meet sooner to address management’s unimpressive wage proposal. The team agrees that the compensation package is woefully lacking and does not reflect the amazing work and commitment that workers have shown to the hospital and community during this unprecedented crisis.

For additional information, please reach out to any Bargaining Team member or Union Representative Ryan Degouveia at 360-882-1989.

Trios Health - Bargaining Continues

We put our best foot forward at the beginning of the session last Friday in the hopes to gain momentum towards a deal. We are increasingly frustrated with the lack of transparency and movement from management. It has become apparent that we must show a UNIFIED FRONT. We need to more than ever prove to LifePoint that we are committed to our cause for better wages, retention, and recruitment. Be prepared for upcoming actions, and opportunities to get involved in the fight to win a fair contract.

Please reach out to your bargaining team or Union Representative Austen Louden 509-340-7372 with any questions or concerns.

UFCW 21 Members Still Fighting For Hazard Pay

Rachel Mahar, UFCW 21 member who works at Safeway in Redondo, WA, poses for a photo while at work. She is wearing a face mask, a UFCW 21 button, and is holding up flyers about hazard pay.

UFCW 21 Member, Rachel Mahar — Safeway Redondo #1186

This week’s #MemberMonday spotlight features Rachel Mahar from Safeway Redondo #1186. Rachel is continue to help lead the fight for hazard pay for both her store and the Des Moines Safeway #3540. Her colleagues, Ian Littau and Heidi Engen worked with our political department to craft a palm card with an email link to the Des Moines city council. With all of their hard work, over 70 emails were sent. A Des Moines Councilmember informed Ian that advocating for hazard pay has garnered more civic activism than any other during his tenure serving on the council and he subsequently pledged to bring our issue to a vote at the next meeting. Once again our members are answering the call to step up for their coworkers and for Labor everywhere! They’ll be at the stores signing up speakers and encouraging folks to send the council a letter via QR code. Thank you Rachel, Ian, and Heidi for your powerful advocacy and leadership!
